SUNDAY SCHOOL: THAT THING THAT YOU DO

Do you ever remember just a word or a line or two from a song that you have heard?  It happened to me recently.  It was a popular song from the time, I think, of my teenage years.  All I can remember is that the singer lauds someone for “that thing that you do.”  He’s starstruck, enamored, in love with “that thing that you do.”  What was that thing? I have no earthly idea.

People often, and sincerely, say to me, “Let me know if there is something I can do for the church.”  Well, I have thought of something.  One thing that everyone can do to make our congregation stronger is to make attendance at Sunday School a priority.  Sunday School is not just for learning, it is also for relating.  Sunday School is not just for children, it is also for adults.  Sunday School is also for witnessing, setting an example.  Adults who attend Sunday School bear witness to children and youth that Sunday School is meaningful and worthwhile.

Sunday School means adding one additional hour to your Sunday morning commitment to the Lord and the church. Why not become a “two hour” Christian on Sunday mornings this year?

Our new Sunday School year begins on Sunday, September 12.  We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 9:45 am for coffee, juice, and snacks.  After a time of welcoming one another, and being welcomed, we will go to our classes to begin the journey through another school year.

A time will be set aside in the worship hour for teacher dedication and installation and prayers for the year.

I want to thank our Christian Education Team for all the planning, encouraging, and promoting (Noticed the signs around the church?) that you have done for the start of another year.  Thank you for “That thing that you do.”

I want to thank all of our teachers and leaders for being willing and excited about serving this year.  Thank you so much for “that thing that you do.”

I want to thank all who are already faithful participants in the Sunday School ministry.  Thank you for “that thing that you do.”

And, to those who have asked what you can do for the church, consider Sunday School.  It is a way of serving and expressing faithfulness that expresses dividends for the whole congregation.

Here we go again!  Sunday School!  It’s that thing that Christians do!
